Does Being Born on the Cusp Affect Astrological Compatibility?

Lots of people wonder whether being born on the cusp affects astrological compatibility in any way, and this is an intriguing question. Cusp sign compatibility is essentially the same as it is for anyone of that sign not born on the cusp, but some astrologers do believe that people born on the cusp take on some qualities of their neighbouring zodiac sign. If we’re comparing astrological compatibility signs, that’s obviously going to be important to take into account.

We use the term “born on the cusp” to describe someone who was born on the day the sun changes from one sign to another. Technically speaking, nobody is ever born on the cusp of anything. The sun changes from one sign to another at an exact moment in time – anyone born at the moment the Sun moves from Taurus to Gemini is a Gemini; anyone born a moment before that is a Taurus. Simple. However, non-astrologers usually don’t know the exact time the sun changed signs, and will therefore find it hard to work out which sun sign they belong to, and will often feel that they have qualities from both. In reality, this is usually explained by the presence of other planets in the affected zodiac signs, but cusp sign compatibility does seem to play a part when someone is born in the last moments of one sign or the very first moments of the next.

If you were born on the Aries/Taurus cusp, you will have a steadying influence toning down the wild Arian impulsiveness, and you’ll therefore find yourself more compatible with those seeking a down to earth and more tameable partner than most Aries people are. For those on the Taurus/Gemini cusp, heavyweight Taurean influences are given a quirky infusion of joy and quick wittedness, making it easier for you to get alone with air signs and with those seeking a chatty, talkative partner. Think about the qualities of your actual sun sign, infused with a light sprinkling of the qualities of the cusp sign. Compatibility is often strained between your sun sign and signs of the following sign’s element –but being born on the cusp helps to ease that.

Were you born on the Gemini/Cancer cusp? If so, you’ll enjoy a more home loving and sensual side to your personality than the average Gemini, and this cusp sign compatibility will help you in relationships with other water signs, and with earth signs too. If yours is the Cancer/Leo cusp, then your Cancerian nervousness and tendency to worry will be softened by the optimism of Leo, making you a much better match with an adventurous sign than you might otherwise have been.

For people born on the Leo/Virgo cusp, Leo arrogance is toned down by modest Virgo energies, so this helps if you fall in love with a gentle sign who might otherwise be intimidated by Leo. When it comes to cusp sign compatibility for those born on the Virgo/Libra cusp, your cusp birth brings you a greater degree of comfort in social situations than most Virgos have, so you’ll find that helpful in a relationship with a gregarious sign, or with anyone who wants to party rather than stay at home.

This pattern of cusp sign compatibility continues throughout the zodiac signs, subtly modifying relationship possibilities. If you were born on the Libra/Scorpio cusp then you’ll have a darker, more serious and more intense side to your personality than the average Libra, and more passion too, which will serve you well if you fall in love with a sensual earth sign or a volatile fire sign. Those born on the Scorpio/Sagittarius cusp conversely will have some of their darkness lifted, and will be much more open minded and gregarious than most Scorpio people. This lightness of touch will be welcome should you fall in love with a light and airy sign like Libra or Gemini.

Cusp sign compatibility slightly changes the love potential for those born on the Sagittarius/Capricorn cusp – with your added determination and groundedness, you’ll be a good match for an earth sign, a highly ambitious person or someone who loves your wanderlust but wishes it could be toned down just slightly. Being born on the Capricorn/Aquarius cusp adds a quirkiness to Capricorn aloofness, and adds a healthy dash of sensuality too, so these individuals will find themselves more compatible with intense signs than Capricorn alone would have been. Aquarius/Pisces cusp people are blessed with a better expression of emotions than most Aquarians, and can therefore handle relationships with more emotional signs better than they otherwise might have done. And finally, those born on the cusp between Pisces and Aries have an inner strength and bravery which is missing from many Pisces natives, enabling them to be happy in relationships which would otherwise have driven Pisces to distraction.

In astrological compatibility, signs are only one part of the big jigsaw puzzle, but those born on a cusp can have an advantage when it comes to getting on with a wider cross section of people than those born firmly in the middle of any particular sign.

  2. I LOVE this- so very helpful I would love to feature the link to this page on my blog.

  3. I found that just as it exressed my cusps side is what I learned about myself. This confirmed that more potential side. Cancer cusp Leo.

  4. So true, I’m a cancer/Leo cusp and I’m always positive and confident , never alow myself to get depressed if things don’t go right, there is always tomorrow and life is ever changing . I see both signs in me , determined like a Leo and humble like a cancer . I weigh things out I’m very intuitive , I love my home but love to go out , not a homebody like most of my cancer friends , but I’m more sensitive to other people feelings more than my Leo friends . It’s a good balance I feel , some people say if your a cusp sign your personality changes from one extreme to the other, I think it’s more balanced the opposite .

  5. 29.54 Cancer with Mercury and Mars in Leo. I am definitely move adventurous and less emotional than the average cancer. Not as bombastic as most Leos. Love them both and always have several of them around. I really see both in me!

  6. I’m an Aries/Taurus. My sun is 00 degrees Taurus. Taurus’ are known as being patient and practical. They think things threw. This doesn’t sound like me at all. Impatient and impulsive. Is me all the way.

    • I’m on the Cusp of Power also born 4/21 and don’t have patience either. Our sun sign is Taurus our mercury sign is Aries. The Sun & planet Mercury as very close to one another year around. Only the moon gets closer and that’s during a eclipse which is not often. Once you learn to balance yourself and give in to both Aries & Taurus traits evenly you’ll be better off 😉

  7. I’m a libra-scropio. Two VERY conflicting zodiacs. I have traits from both, but considering I was born closer to Scorpio, I’m more scorpio’ish. But Strangley, I’m kind of virgo too.

  8. Pisces/aries cusp. Is it compatible with air signs like say gemini or others? Does anyone know? I land right on the border of ending pisces and starting aries. 3/20

  9. I’m a aries/Taurus cusp and my boyfriend is a Scorpio/Sagittarius .. So what is a compatibility match when two cusp signs get together?

  10. Scorpio/Sagittarius 🙂

  11. aquarious/pisces and I can definetly say I get along better with water signs than I do air signs. 2/20
