Jupiter in Relationship Astrology: A Philosophical Love Match?

Of all the planet, Jupiter tends to be the least understood when it comes to relationship compatibility. Does Jupiter have a role to play in synastry, and if so, what is it? What impact does one person’s Jupiter have on his or her partner, and what is the astrological significance of Jupiter signs in love?

Jupiter in astrology represents optimism, expansion, justice, luck, tolerance and generosity. Its influence in a birth chart is usually a positive thing, and its position in your chart shows those areas of life in which you find joy, where you will find good fortune, and where you can teach others. In relationship compatibility terms, it can indicate the areas of life which will be easiest, best and least likely to cause conflict in a relationship.

Jupiter is one of the slower moving planets, and spends around one year in each sign, in a never ending cycle. It’s highly likely that someone born in the same year as you has Jupiter in the same sign as you, or as an absolute certainty in the neighbouring sign. For relationships which don’t have a large age gap, therefore, you will find yourselves with perhaps the same Jupiter sign, or signs a few apart on the zodiac wheel. For this reason, it’s not the Jupiter sign itself, so much, which concerns astrologers when looking at relationship compatibility. Much is made in love compatibility of zodiac signs, but they are not the whole story. When we analyse Jupiter compatibility, we will more often look at the partners’ Jupiter houses (areas of life governed by Jupiter, which will be different for each individual) and at the aspects made from one person’s Jupiter to other points in their partner’s chart.

Where your partner’s Jupiter falls in your own chart will indicate the area where he or she brings you good luck, traditionally – or, for those of us who think you make your own luck, areas where your partner can inspire you to make that leap of faith that then turns out so well. For example, if your partners’ Jupiter is in your 4th house, that might be just what you need in order to improve relationships with your family or to forgive and forget a longstanding family feud. Perhaps your Jupiter in turn falls into his or her 10th house, and your partner might find that it’s your encouragement, enthusiasm and optimism which helps him or her take the risks needed to get ahead career-wise. These are relatively minor considerations in relationship compatibility, but they do add colour to a compatibility chart and help to bring the relationship to life.

Perhaps the strongest Jupiter links in relationship compatibility are links from one person’s Jupiter to the other’s Sun, Moon or Ascendant. This is the kind of relationship which simply makes someone happy; the kind of partnership where just being around your other half is enough to lift your spirits. Jupiter’s bountiful and optimistic influence cements these partnerships together in a more long lasting way than the more passionate links between Mars, Venus, Pluto and Uranus can.

When both partners’ Jupiters are in complementary signs, this does also help to give an undercurrent of stability to a relationship, because the partners will have similar philosophies of life – similar views on religion, fairness, humanitarian issues, ethics and so forth. However, that alone is not enough to sustain relationship compatibility, so Jupiter signs are only considered as supporting evidence for good compatibility, not as a compatibility indicator in themselves.
